The Inspiration

How to Bake a Cake began as a story about children discovering that love can be shown through what we make and give—but it didn’t stop there. As the story came to life guided by the mission of the non-profit Icing Smiles, it became clear that this message was meant to move off the page and into real kitchens, real homes, and real acts of kindness.

How to Join

Challenge Guidelines

For children up to 18 years old. The challenge runs from February 1st - February 28th. Email your photos and recipe before the deadline to be included in the cookbook. 
All those who participate will be included in the cookbook. We will be selecting some participants to have their recipe featured! For the full experience we recommend purchasing the cookbook, t-shirt, and book that inspired the challenge "How to Bake a Cake".

Frequently asked questions

Be sure and add the pre-order of the cookbook to your cart to receive a copy of the book your child will be included in! Participants will automatically be included in the cookbook, but they will not receive a copy of the cookbook without separate purchase.

The challenge runs from February 1st to February 28th. Participants need to get their photos and recipes to us at hello@paperseedpress.com by March 1st to be included.

No! We want this challenge to be accessible to any children that wish to participate. Assist as needed but we highly encourage you to have your children be as involved as possible.

We highly recommend pre-ordering our book, "How to Bake a Cake" to receive an advanced video version of the story to watch prior to baking your cakes. This book is focused on how baking can make a difference in someone's life and helps kids to recognize that they need to plan the cake for the person they are giving it to. What would they like?

The cookbook will not be shipped until after our Cake Kindness Challenge is completed at the end of February as the entries for the challenge will be included in the cookbook. We anticipate physical copies being ready for shipment in April.

We are so excited that all participants will be included in the cookbook and will be looking for full recipes with clear instructions and photos of the baker with their cake. We would also love a quote or two included on what they thought of the challenge. We aren't looking for the best or most beautiful cakes, we are looking for those who had a great experience and whose submissions will be a positive addition to the cookbook.
