What if the best way to say “I love you”… is with a cake?

This is a pre-order of How to Bake a Cake. The illustrations are currently being completed and we anticipate books will be shipped in April. You will receive a link to an author read-a-loud video of the book with purchase so you can enjoy with your family right away, or watch before you complete the Cake Kindness Challenge!

How to Bake a Cake is a tender, heartwarming picture book about what it really means to care for someone you love.

Rosie and Ruby miss playing with their best friend Julia, who has been away getting treatment for something called cancer. When Julia rings the bell for her last treatment, the girls want to celebrate her in a special way—by baking her a cake. But making the perfect cake turns out to be harder than they expect. Their first attempt doesn’t go as planned, and they soon realize that true kindness requires thoughtfulness, patience, and sometimes a little sacrifice.

Faced with a choice between buying the scooters they’ve been saving for or using their money to start over and bake a cake just for Julia, Rosie and Ruby choose love. When they surprise Julia with their finished cake—surrounded by friends—the joy they create is sweeter than anything they could have bought for themselves.

Created in partnership with Icing Smiles, a nonprofit that provides custom celebration cakes to families impacted by critical illness, How to Bake a Cake beautifully reflects their mission: bringing smiles through cakes, compassion, and community.

This book is perfect for:

  • Children ages 4–8
  • Families looking for gentle ways to talk about illness, empathy, and friendship
  • Classrooms and libraries teaching kindness, generosity, and emotional awareness
  • Families impacted by cancer or medical journeys
  • Anyone who believes small acts of love can make a big difference

How to Bake a Cake reminds readers—young and old—that the most meaningful gifts aren’t always perfect, but they are always made with heart.

A portion of all proceeds goes directly to Icing Smiles in their efforts to give cakes to families impacted by critical illnesses.

Not only will your children see the perspectives of different circumstances and experience the joy of giving and receiving, but by purchasing this book you are giving back to Icing Smiles; a very special organization that donates cakes to kids with critical illnesses.
